Start with shared context, add a follow-up question and learn to end a conversation naturally.

Start with shared context

Choose something in the shared situation, such as a course, journey or activity. Avoid assuming all Norwegians like the same topics. A simple observation invites a response without asking personal questions too early.

Dette kurset virker interessant. Har du vært her før?

This course seems interesting. Have you been here before?

Follow up on the answer

Rather than jumping to another memorised question, follow a detail in the answer. Share a small detail about yourself so the conversation does not become an interview. Match the question’s depth to the situation.

Du sa at du liker å gå tur. Hvor pleier du å gå?

You said you enjoy walking. Where do you usually go?

End without awkwardness

Small talk does not have to last long. Close warmly and give a simple reason if needed. Do not offer invitations or future plans you do not mean; a clear friendly ending is enough.

Det var hyggelig å snakke med deg. Vi ses på kurset!

It was nice talking to you. See you at the course!

Try it yourself

Practise a six-line conversation with an opening, reply, follow-up, small personal detail and closing. Change the topic next time.
