English translation

Calling a tradition old can suggest it has always been unchanged. In practice, both content and meaning can change between generations. At a local event participants discussed an annual celebration. Some wanted the programme preserved as remembered from childhood. Others wanted activities more neighbours could relate to. The disagreement concerned not only the programme but also ownership of the tradition. Someone suggested examining how the celebration had actually evolved. Several apparently original elements turned out to be later additions. This discovery did not remove every conflict, but changed the starting point. Preservation and renewal seemed less like absolute opposites. A tradition could provide continuity precisely because people kept making it relevant. Changes still needed justification so earlier experience was not simply pushed aside. Cultural heritage can thus be understood as a conversation between memories and new needs. The question is not only what to retain, but how more people can participate in what we choose to carry forward.
