Before: før

Inside a clause introduced by før, the subject precedes the verb: før vi går. If this clause comes first, the main clause uses verb-before-subject order.

The rule, step by step

  1. Før means before. It can precede a noun in før middag or a clause in før vi spiser.
  2. A clause after før is subordinate. Its subject precedes the verb, as in før vi begynner, rather than using question inversion.
  3. When a før phrase or clause comes first, the main-clause verb follows before its subject.
