Compare jeg kommer ikke with fordi jeg ikke kommer and check negative word order step by step.

Negation in the main clause

In a basic main clause, ikke follows the finite verb. If an adverbial opens the sentence, check V2 too. Do not transfer Arabic or English word order mechanically.

Jeg drikker ikke kaffe. I dag drikker jeg ikke kaffe.

Drikker precedes ikke in both examples.

Negation in the subordinate clause

After subordinators such as fordi and at, the basic pattern is subordinator, subject, ikke and finite verb. Learn complete phrases rather than negation alone. This is a useful foundation for learner writing.

Jeg blir hjemme fordi jeg ikke føler meg frisk.

After fordi: jeg, then ikke, then føler.

When the subordinate clause comes first

Keep subordinate word order inside the opening clause. The following main clause begins with its finite verb because the entire subordinate clause occupies the first constituent position. Use a comma after the opening subordinate clause.

Fordi jeg ikke føler meg frisk, blir jeg hjemme.

Blir comes before jeg in the main clause.

Try it yourself

Complete Jeg vet at hun ___ kommer i dag. Then explain that you cannot attend using fordi.
